Human Tensions

The recurring pulls beneath leadership decisions — ten tensions through which human action unfolds.

Human Tension Cycle — Brain, Feelings, Tension and Behavior

Human life is shaped by tensions. These tensions are universal and arise from the competing needs, desires, responsibilities, and uncertainties that are part of the human experience. Tension is not a problem to eliminate; it is the space where growth becomes possible.

My philosophy identifies ten fundamental human tensions that influence how we think, feel, decide, and act. They appear in our personal lives, our relationships, our leadership, and our response to change. There are no right or wrong sides — only different forces that pull us in different directions.

Understanding these tensions helps us recognise better the sources of internal pressure that shape human behavior and the choices we make in response to them.

You cannot always choose the tensions you face. Nor can you eliminate tension. You can learn how to navigate them and shape your response.

Yet people facing the same tension often respond very differently.

What explains those different responses?
